Arktikum

Introduction

Arktikum, on the banks of the Ounasjoki river in Rovaniemi, opened in 1997 to a design by Danish architects: a glowing glass corridor shooting toward the river like a tunnel to the Arctic, with half the building sunk beneath the ground — an Arctic building in its own right. Two exhibitions explore the Far North: the science of auroras and polar night, Sami reindeer culture and settler life, and the deep impact of climate change on the Arctic. The crowd-pleaser is the aurora theatre, where you lie back as simulated northern lights ripple overhead. In winter, step outside into the snow, stamp the Arctic Circle line and meet the reindeer — essential Rovaniemi for families and polar buffs alike.
