Praça da Ribeira

Introduction

Praca da Ribeira, on the right bank of the Douro at the southern edge of Porto's old town, is the river city's most soulful square. Medieval houses in faded colours stack toward the water, granite cobbles glow warmly in the sun, and street guitarists mix with the clink of glasses. Restaurant tables spill from the house steps down to the river's edge amid the scent of grilled sardines and port wine. The lower deck of the Dom Luis I bridge links the square to the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia across the river; a funicular or the bridge's upper deck gives higher views over red rooftops and the winding water. At dusk, as the lodges' lights reflect on the Douro, Porto is at its most magical.
