Introduction

Independence Rock is a massive granite formation about 130 feet (40 m) high in Natrona County, Wyoming, beside the Oregon Trail and protected as a Wyoming State Historic Site. Emigrants in the mid-1800s aimed to reach it before July 4 and carved their names into its surface, earning it the name Independence Rock and the nickname "the Register of the Desert".
