Dunedin Travel Guide

Scottish-flavored city in southeast NZ: a grand Victorian station, albatrosses and penguins.

📍 Destination Overview

Dunedin sits on the shores of Otago Harbour on the southeast of New Zealand's South Island. Founded by Scottish settlers, it retains a strong Scottish character and is known as the Edinburgh of the South. The ornate Dunedin Railway Station is one of the most photographed buildings in the country, and Larnach Castle is New Zealand's only castle. The city is famous for its steep streets — Baldwin Street was once the world's steepest. The Otago Peninsula just outside the city is a paradise for wildlife, where you can watch royal albatrosses soar and spot rare yellow-eyed penguins and sea lions. Nearby, the Moeraki Boulders lie scattered across the beach, round and bizarre. History, architecture and wildlife combine to give this southern city its unique appeal.
