Brazil's highland planned capital: Niemeyer's modernist buildings in airplane-shaped layout.

📍 Destination Overview

Brasilia, Brazil's capital, was built from scratch on the central highlands in the 1950s; its bold modernist design is a World Heritage site. From above it resembles an airplane. Niemeyer designed icons such as the crown-shaped cathedral and the National Congress at the Three Powers Square. A pinnacle of modern planning, it is a pilgrimage for architecture lovers.

No.1 Brasiléia
Praça dos Três Poderes
Praça dos Três Poderes lies at the core of Brasília, gathering the emblematic buildings of the three branches of government — the presidential Palácio do Planalto, the Congress and the Supreme Federal Court — all by Oscar Niemeyer. The square holds the aluminium Pombal dove and the 100-metre 'Warrior of Cândido Portinari' panel, while a mirrored pool reflects the minimalist concrete lines. A masterpiece of modern urban planning and a UNESCO site, it is the first stop to grasp Brazil's democracy and architecture. At dawn, with no one around, the concrete lines feel pure and still.

Catedral Metropolitana
Brasília Cathedral is among Oscar Niemeyer's most famous masterpieces, completed in 1970, known for its stunning modern form. Sixteen white curved concrete columns rise and flare outward, like a crown looking to the heavens or hands in prayer—full of upward motion. Most of the body is underground; visitors pass through a dim corridor and emerge into openness—a ring of glass dome sheds daylight, three suspended angel statues float, and colored glass flows blue, green, white and brown—sacred and ethereal. Breaking the traditional church form, it is a classic of modern religious architecture and Brasília's most photogenic landmark.

Alvorada Palace
Palacio da Alvorada in Brasilia is the official residence of the President of Brazil. Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, it is known for its slender curved columns and extensive glass walls and is regarded as an early work of Brasilia's modernist architecture. The palace stands beside water, with rows of columns reflected on the surface, creating a clean and striking image. As a presidential residence its interior is generally not open to the public, though the exterior and surroundings can be viewed from a distance.

Itamaraty Palace
Palacio Itamaraty in Brasilia is the seat of Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, it is one of the landmarks of the city's modernist architecture, known for its arched colonnade, reflecting pool and courtyards. Water surrounds the palace, mirroring the columns to striking effect. Inside are reception and ceremonial rooms holding art and diplomatic gifts. The building is used mainly for diplomatic events; the exterior and water features can be seen at any time, while interior access usually requires a booked guided tour.

Memorial JK
Memorial JK in Brasilia commemorates Juscelino Kubitschek, the president who drove the building of the city. Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, it has a cylindrical main structure that matches the city's modernist style. Inside are exhibition rooms on his life and on the construction of Brasilia, a library, and his tomb. A statue stands outside as the marker of the memorial space. Together with nearby memorial buildings it forms a key place for understanding how Brasilia was created, and it can be visited with other buildings on the city's axis.

Congresso Nacional
The National Congress building is Brasília's most iconic and Niemeyer's modernist masterpiece. It pairs twin towers of unequal height with two "bowls" facing opposite ways—the inverted dome is the Chamber of Deputies, the upturned bowl the Senate; the towers are offices. Simple geometric forms rise at the end of the open monumental axis, becoming a visual symbol of Brasília and the nation, printed on Brazilian currency. Visitors can book a free tour of the plenary halls, the Green Room and interior art, learning the legislature's work. The grand building, open water plaza and rising towers are unforgettable.
