Ciudad Perdida, the 'Lost City,' is one of the largest archaeological sites in the Americas, buried in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia. Built by the Tayrona people around 800 AD—centuries before Machu Picchu—it was only rediscovered by treasure hunters in 1972. More than 1,200 stone terraces and carved steps climb the mountainside, and the Kogui and Wiwa still regard it as sacred ground. Reaching it means a guided 4–6 day trek from Santa Marta over jungle ridges and river crossings; no roads come near. Demanding but unforgettable.
