Chic Atlantic resort — golden sands, the Hand & a glam marina

📍 Destination Overview

Punta del Este, beside Uruguay's capital Montevideo, is a peninsula resort at the Atlantic-Rio de la Plata confluence, called the South American Saint-Tropez. Golden beaches and marinas give it a refined air. The giant La Mano hand rises from the sand at the tip; one side has big surf, the other calm water for swimming and sunsets. Summer brings its festive peak; other seasons are peace.

Punta del Este is at its liveliest from December to March, when beaches, nightlife and festivals peak; spring and autumn are mild and calm, offering the same beauty at better prices. Spend one or two days around the peninsula: shoot the 'Hand' monument at the tip, then from surfy Playa Brava to calm Playa Mansa for a swim and sunset; browse the marina, glimpse Gorriti Island and the old lighthouse, and settle in for a Uruguayan asado or seafood. With time, tour inland wineries. Relaxed yet refined, the city rewards early booking in summer. Golden sands, a sleek marina and the great hand in the sand make Punta del Este South America's most charming coastal escape.
