Montevideo's Rambla stretches about 22 km along the Rio de la Plata, running from the old city to the eastern beaches — one of the world's longest urban waterfront promenades and the backbone of local life. Joggers and cyclists take the morning breeze; by dusk the lawns and seawall belong to anglers, dog-walking families and mate-drinking regulars. Tired legs can stop at a waterfront bar for a medio y medio sparkling white and watch the sun sink into the river's muddy, mellow waters.
