Mondsee Travel Guide

Mondsee is loveliest in summer (May–September): the lake turns brilliant blue for swimming, sailing and cycling, and the basilica, shore and Alpine reflections form a postcard. Spring and autumn are quieter and photogenic; winter freezes the lake to stillness while nearby slopes buzz with skiers. Recommended: start at the Basilika St. Michael recalling The Sound of Music's wedding, stroll the lakefront; hire a bike or take a boat in the afternoon; finish dinner lakeside as the last sun gilds the peaks. The village is tiny and walkable, and an excellent base for Wolfgangsee and the rest of the lakes or a day trip to Salzburg. Stay by the water or in the village centre.
