The mechanical carillon in the residence tower strikes up daily at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. from a repertoire of several dozen tunes, and the museum's windows frame Mozart's statue on the square — cityscape and exhibit in one glance.

In Salzburg's Itzling rail yards, a roundhouse with its turntable has been kept alive by enthusiasts as a working locomotive museum. In steam days engines were spun on this very table into their individual berths; today three generations — steam, diesel and electric — share the shed, several machines mid-restoration, so visitors see a workshop in progress rather than polished exhibits. Run by a volunteers' association, the site opens only rarely, usually on weekends or themed event days, so checking the schedule is essential homework.

Even in Salzburg one court composer lives in Mozart's shadow: Michael Haydn, younger brother of Joseph. He served the Salzburg court from 1763 until his death in 1806 — forty-three years — writing sacred music at astonishing volume, works the teenage Mozart studied closely. Housed inside the Mozart Residence at Makartplatz, this small museum uses manuscripts, letters and instruments to trace his career and the wider economics of eighteenth-century court musicians. Modest in scale, it rewards an unhurried hour and pairs naturally with the Mozart displays in the same building.

Set in Wals-Siezenheim on Salzburg's western edge, the Red Bull Arena opened in 2003 with about 18,000 seats and grew to roughly 30,000 for UEFA Euro 2008, when it staged three group matches. Home side RB Salzburg has all but monopolised the Austrian Bundesliga in recent years, appears regularly in the Champions League and runs one of Europe's most productive academies. On non-match days, guided tours open the dressing rooms, players' tunnel, press hall and dugouts of Austria's most modern football stage.

The Salzach splits a town and a country at Oberndorf: Austria on the north bank, Germany's Laufen on the south. On Christmas Eve 1818, assistant priest Joseph Mohr and schoolteacher Franz Xaver Gruber first performed “Silent Night” in the town's St. Nikola church, and the carol has since been translated into more than three hundred languages. The flood-damaged church was demolished in the early twentieth century, and the Silent Night Memorial Chapel, consecrated in 1937, now marks the spot; every 24 December at 5 p.m. the song rings out here again in many tongues.

Tucked down Salzburg's Kaigasse, St. Cajetan's was built for the Theatine order from 1691 to around 1700 by the Zuccalli architects from the southern Alps, and both facade and dome lean toward early Roman baroque — an Italian accent in a city of local baroque. Admission is free; the high altar honours the order's founder Cajetan, his gilded drapery set against restrained white stucco. The lane outside drops straight to the Salzach promenade, linking the cathedral and Franciscan church into one walking route, with this as its quietest stop.
