Introduction

The Salzach splits a town and a country at Oberndorf: Austria on the north bank, Germany's Laufen on the south. On Christmas Eve 1818, assistant priest Joseph Mohr and schoolteacher Franz Xaver Gruber first performed “Silent Night” in the town's St. Nikola church, and the carol has since been translated into more than three hundred languages. The flood-damaged church was demolished in the early twentieth century, and the Silent Night Memorial Chapel, consecrated in 1937, now marks the spot; every 24 December at 5 p.m. the song rings out here again in many tongues.
