Akureyri is Iceland's northern capital, at the end of the longest fjord, Eyjafjörður, a hub for the northern ring road. Summer (Jun-Aug) has long days, great for Goðafoss, the Mývatn geothermal area (pseudocraters, mud pots, Mývatn Nature Baths) and Húsavík whale watching; autumn-winter (Sep-Mar) in the north is excellent for aurora chasing. The north is colder with winter snow — keep warm and be cautious on winter roads. About 5 hours' drive from Reykjavík or a 45-minute flight.
