Landmannalaugar is a famous geothermal area in Iceland's remote interior, walled by rhyolite mountains in pink, yellow, green and purple that contrast sharply with black obsidian lava fields - an almost otherworldly scene. It is the northern gateway to the country's most celebrated trail, the Laugavegur (about 55 km to Thorsmork), and one of the rare places in Iceland where you can soak in a natural hot spring right in the wilderness, in a warm pool beside the base camp. It is reached only by F-roads open solely in summer, requiring a 4WD.
