The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon occupies a grand 17th-century Benedictine abbey on Place des Terreaux, at the heart of the city between the Rhône and Saône rivers. One of France's largest fine-arts museums, it spans more than five millennia, from Egyptian artifacts to medieval sculpture and Impressionist painting. The walls shine with works by Perugino, Rubens, Veronese, Monet, Sisley, Gauguin, and Rodin. Wandering the vaulted galleries, then pausing in the airy cloister garden with its benches and orange trees, feels like stepping between two eras of French life.
