Braga Travel Guide

The Bom Jesus Funicular (Elevador do Bom Jesus) serves the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary on the edge of Braga and is one of the oldest funiculars still running in the Iberian Peninsula, opened in 1882. Driven by water counterbalance, its two cars travel up and down the steep slope on parallel tracks, right beside the sanctuary's zigzag stairway and chapels. Riding it saves the effort of climbing the long staircase; at the top lies the Bom Jesus sanctuary, with views over Braga and the surrounding hills. The funicular is itself part of Portugal's industrial heritage.

The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte stands on a wooded hill east of Braga, Portugal — a masterpiece of Baroque religious architecture inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. A zigzagging staircase of some 300 steps, adorned with stuccowork, stone carvings and fountains symbolising the Stations of the Cross, leads to the hilltop church, with chapels narrating biblical scenes along the way. Climbing the steps blends devotion with spectacle, and from the top visitors survey Braga and its green valley. The sanctuary is at once a place of pilgrimage and an open-air gallery where garden, sculpture and architecture meet.

Sé de Braga is the oldest cathedral in Portugal, begun in the 12th century and enlarged over centuries so that Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque layers now merge in one building. Its chapels glow with silver and gold liturgical objects and blue-and-white azulejo tiles, while a quiet cloister and carved choir stalls hold the solemnity of a thousand-year-old episcopal city. Known as the soul of 'the Portuguese Rome', the cathedral witnesses the roots and continuity of Christianity in north-west Iberia.

Braga Castle is a military relic of one of Portugal's oldest cities, begun in the 12th century by Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, to secure the northern frontier. Only a tower and stretches of wall survive, yet they still guard the hilltop panorama. With the Bom Jesus sanctuary below, it forms Braga's twin landmarks of faith and defence in the 'Holy City'.

The Museu dos Biscainhos in Braga's old town occupies a 17th–18th-century Baroque nobleman's mansion, the Palácio dos Biscainhos. The museum displays decorative arts—Portuguese tiles, ceramics, furniture, textiles and horse-drawn carriages—recreating the daily life of an aristocratic household. Behind the palace is a formal Baroque garden with clipped hedges, parterres and blue-and-white tiles, a quiet courtyard in the old town. Together, the building and its collections illustrate the historic life of the Braga region.

The Sanctuary of Sameiro (Santuário do Sameiro) stands on a hill southeast of Braga and is one of Portugal's major Marian shrines. Construction began in the mid-19th century in an eclectic style, with a tall dome and twin towers on the facade; inside is venerated the statue of the Immaculate Conception. A broad staircase and esplanade open up sweeping views over Braga and the surrounding valley. It draws many pilgrims each year and lies close to Bom Jesus do Monte, so the two are often visited together.
