Bern Travel Guide

Bern, Switzerland's capital embraced by the Aare River, famed for a UNESCO medieval old town, Clock Tower, and bear pit.

📍 Destination Overview

Bern is the capital of Switzerland, set on a peninsula deeply embraced by the Aare River, and its well-preserved medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 6-km-long arcade street is Europe's longest covered shopping promenade, dotted with sandstone buildings and fountains. The Clock Tower, dating from the 13th century, puts on a mechanical puppet show on the hour, and Einstein conceived the theory of relativity in his apartment here. Across the river, the Bear Pit keeps the bear that is the city's symbol, and the Rose Garden overlooks the red-tiled panorama of the old town. Compared with other big cities, Bern is unpretentious and understated, radiating a composed historical charm.
