Spain's Avila, ringed by 11th-century Romanesque walls - Europe's finest intact medieval fortification and a World Heritage site.

📍 Destination Overview

Avila, an ancient city on the Castilian plateau, is Europe's highest provincial capital. Its 11th-century walls, raised to keep out the Moors, stretch 2,500 metres with 88 towers and nine gates, Europe's most complete medieval fortification. Saint Vincent's Basilica and Saint Teresa's house and convent anchor its medieval old town, and the ramparts can be walked for panoramic views.
