Cinque Terre Travel Guide

The Cinque Terre are five fishing villages stacked on the Ligurian cliffs — Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore — inscribed with the whole coast as a UNESCO site in 1997. Candy-coloured houses cascade above the deep blue Mediterranean, with dry-stone terraces and vineyards climbing the slopes. Of the coastal and hillside trail network, the Sentiero Azzurro is the star; the Manarola-Riomaggiore stretch takes just 20 minutes (hiking card required; sections close after landslides). Trains run every few minutes between villages, and ferries add a sea-level view. After the day-trippers leave, watching the lights come out from above Corniglia is the Cinque Terre at its quietest.

The main street runs from the station to the small harbor, lined with shops and restaurants, quite lively; the harbor, rocks and viewpoint are great places to enjoy the colorful village and the Mediterranean blue and sunset. The famous cliffside trail to neighboring Manarola, the Via dell'Amore (Lover's Lane), is romantically famous (subject to opening). Visiting the Cinque Terre and admiring the pretty, colorful Riomaggiore is a beautiful spot on the Ligurian coast.

Monterosso (Monterosso al Mare) is the largest of the Cinque Terre and the only resort fishing village with a wide sandy beach. With both a colorful old village and a beach resort, it is the most relaxing, swim-friendly village of the Cinque Terre and a pleasant spot on the Ligurian coast. Unlike the other four villages clinging between steep cliffs with almost no beach, Monterosso has the only broad, flat, open sandy beach of the Cinque Terre, making it a pleasant town blending rustic fishing-village charm with seaside resort function. The village has two parts: one is the rustic, colorful old village (with colorful traditional houses, narrow lanes, an ancient church, and a hilltop monastery and castle ruins, quaint and pretty); the other is a newer beach resort area, along the open, golden beach spread rows of colorful umbrellas and loungers, plus seafront restaurants and hotels, where visitors enjoy the sun, sand and Mediterranean blue (swimming, playing, sunbathing) at leisure. Thus Monterosso is the best village of the Cinque Terre to slow down, relax and enjoy the beach. The hillsides here are also covered with ancient vineyards and lemon trees. Visiting the Cinque Terre, strolling Monterosso and enjoying the rustic village and pleasant beach is a delightful spot on the Ligurian coast.

The Church of San Pietro stands on the promontory above Vernazza in Italy's Cinque Terre, built in the 13th century as a precious example of Ligurian Gothic religious architecture. Its striking façade alternates black and white marble bands, and its bell tower was originally an 11th-century defensive watchtower. The small square in front opens onto the Mediterranean, offering panoramic views over Vernazza's colorful houses and bay — one of the most iconic postcard views of Cinque Terre and a must-visit for hikers.

The Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Reggio sits on the hillside above Vernazza, reached by a centuries-old pilgrim path of stone steps in roughly thirty to forty minutes. This simple medieval church shelters a dark wooden Madonna, venerated for generations by fishermen praying for safe voyages. The shaded square in front opens to sweeping views over Vernazza's painted houses and its harbour. Compared with the crowded waterfront below, it feels like another world, and the walk itself, past olive terraces and dry-stone walls, distils the rural side of the Cinque Terre into one short climb.

The Capuchin convent and its Church of San Francesco crown a small hill above Monterosso's old town, founded in the seventeenth century, their white walls framed by pines and blue sea. Inside the church hangs a Crucifixion long attributed to the Flemish master Anthony van Dyck, widely considered the most important artwork in the Cinque Terre. The terrace in front looks out over Monterosso's crescent bay and painted houses, at its best at dusk. The climb from the old town takes barely fifteen minutes, yet delivers a world of quiet away from the busy beaches below.
