Cinque Terre Travel Guide

Five cliffside fishing villages in Liguria: pastel houses, the Via dell'Amore and azure sea.

📍 Destination Overview

Cinque Terre is a string of five colorful cliffside fishing villages on the Ligurian coast - Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore - a UNESCO World Heritage site. Pastel houses cascade down steep cliffs to the azure Mediterranean, with terraced vineyards and lemon groves. The villages are linked by scenic hiking trails and coastal trains. The famous Via dell'Amore (Lover's Lane) clings to the cliffs, and Manarola's sunset is one of Italy's most photographed scenes. No big-city noise - just sea breeze, fishing boats, and timeless beauty.

No.1 Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre strings five fishing villages along the Ligurian cliffs—Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore—listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. The cliff path called Sentiero Azzurro links them; the short Manarola–Riomaggiore stretch takes about 20 minutes past dry-stone terraces and vines. Trains run every few minutes between villages. For calm, climb to Corniglia's viewpoint after dark.

Monterosso al Mare
No.3 Cinque Terre
Monterosso al Mare
Monterosso al Mare is the westernmost of the five Cinque Terre villages and the only one with a proper sandy beach. It is famous for its lemons, anchovies and trofie al pesto, and the hillsides behind town are terraced with vines and lemon groves. The medieval Old Town, with the 14th-century Aurora Tower and the Capuchin convent, sits on the eastern side, while the newer part spreads along the beach promenade. In summer the sands pack out, so arrive early for a swim or linger into the evening when the crowds thin and the pastel houses glow in the last light.
