Cinque Terre

Introduction

The Cinque Terre are five fishing villages stacked on the Ligurian cliffs — Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore — inscribed with the whole coast as a UNESCO site in 1997. Candy-coloured houses cascade above the deep blue Mediterranean, with dry-stone terraces and vineyards climbing the slopes. Of the coastal and hillside trail network, the Sentiero Azzurro is the star; the Manarola-Riomaggiore stretch takes just 20 minutes (hiking card required; sections close after landslides). Trains run every few minutes between villages, and ferries add a sea-level view. After the day-trippers leave, watching the lights come out from above Corniglia is the Cinque Terre at its quietest.
