Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, inside Ocean Expo Park in Motobu, is famous for Kuroshio Sea — one of the world's largest tanks at 35 m long, 10 m deep and 7,500 tonnes, behind a 27-metre acrylic panel. Two whale sharks and several manta rays cruise among groupers and golden trevally; it was the first aquarium anywhere to keep whale sharks long-term. The Coral Sea hall grows 70+ reef species in natural light, the Deep Sea zone recreates life at 200 metres, and touch pools let kids handle starfish and sea cucumbers. Outside, Ocean Expo Park adds Emerald Beach, tropical botanical gardens and an Okinawan heritage village. Okinawa's top family sight — allow half a day.

Cape Manzamo
Cape Manzamo on Okinawa's Onna village coast is a broad grassy tableland lifted from ancient coral reef. The name means seats for ten thousand — legend says King Sho Kei of Ryukyu marvelled that so many could sit here. The cliff edge reaches toward the East China Sea in the shape of an elephant's trunk, the cape's signature silhouette, with remarkably clear water and caves visible below. It is one of Okinawa's most celebrated sunset spots and appeared in a Godzilla film. Sea breezes, grazing cattle and a vast blue horizon make this an essential stop on a west-coast drive.

American Village
American Village in Mihama, Chatan, sits beside Kadena Air Base on central Okinawa. Steeped in American culture since the postwar years, it has grown into the island's most distinctive entertainment quarter. The Ferris wheel at the entrance — a full turn takes about eight minutes — glows over the neighbourhood after dark. American-style shopping streets mix streetwear, vintage shops and Okinawan souvenirs, while taco rice, burgers and steakhouses stand beside Okinawan diners. At dusk, walk to the Sunset Beach terrace and watch the sun drop into the East China Sea, a ritual locals love too. Manga warehouses, live houses and late-night diners give the village its characteristically mixed Okinawa-meets-America nightlife.

Ameku-gu Shrine
Ameku-gu is one of the Ryukyu Eight Shrines, tucked into a residential block by Naha's Tomari port. Recognised as an official shrine by the Ryukyu court in the 15th century and recorded as 'Ameku Gongen' in the Ryukyu Shintoki, legend ties its founding to a mountain oracle and a spring cave. Burned in the Battle of Okinawa, it was rebuilt on this site in 1972. Its rarest feature is a three-tier layout: past the torii lies a ground-level car park, stairs descend to the worship hall and office, and one level deeper sits the utaki, the indigenous Ryukyuan sacred grotto; a tiny Ryugu Shrine and Benzaiten perch above. Native belief and Shinto coexist here — a quiet but vivid lesson in Ryukyu's religious fusion.

Chibana Castle Ruins (Chibana Gusuku) stand on a limestone hill in the Chibana district of Okinawa City, the seat of the Chibana anji around the 14th century. Most walls have vanished, but the tomb of the warrior Oni-Ufugusuku is said to lie on the slope, and a hilltop deck built in the 1960s surveys Kadena Base and the surrounding coast.
