Chiayi, on the Jianan Plain in southwestern Taiwan, is the gateway to Alishan. Famed for cypress groves, sunrise and sea of clouds, Alishan is reached by the 1912-built railway, one of the world's great mountain lines. The Zhushan sunrise train and March cherry blossoms are highlights. Chiayi itself shines with turkey rice and night-market snacks.
