📍 Destination Overview
Spiš Castle stands alone atop a limestone hill in eastern Slovakia, among Central Europe's largest castle sites and, with its monuments, a UNESCO site. Dating to the 12th century, it was the political and military heart of the Spiš region, built in tiers up the hillside. After an 18th-century fire it fell to ruins, yet its vast remains exude a stirring grandeur.

Spiš Castle is a vast medieval castle ruin standing alone atop a limestone hill in eastern Slovakia — among the largest castle sites in Central Europe, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with surrounding monuments; it is best visited in spring, summer, or autumn (May–Sep). Built in the 12th century and expanded over the centuries, it has multiple walls, a round main tower, and palaces, and was abandoned into ruins after an 18th-century fire — the vast weathered walls sprawling across the hill are solemn and breathtaking, and from the top you can overlook the whole castle and the endless Spiš plains. The World Heritage landscape also includes the clerical town of Spišská Kapitula, the UNESCO old town at the foot of the hill, and the Church of the Holy Spirit at Žehra. Near Poprad; self-drive is convenient.
