Pocitelj, on the Neretva south of Mostar, is Bosnia's best-preserved Ottoman stone village, a living open-air museum. Limestone houses and arches climb in tiers up the steep east bank among pomegranates and grapevines. A medieval wall rings the village, topped by a round fort whose summit overlooks the green river and valley, with the domed Hadzi-Alija mosque as landmark.
