Naxos is the largest island of Greece's Cyclades, blending ancient Greek history, medieval Venetian heritage and varied mountain-and-coast scenery. On the islet of Palatia at the harbour stands the massive marble Portara - the surviving gate of an unfinished Temple of Apollo from 530 BC and one of the Cyclades' most iconic landmarks. Legend says Theseus abandoned the princess Ariadne here after leaving Crete. At the island's centre, Mount Zas (about 1,004 m) is the highest peak in the Cyclades.
