Santorini (Thira) is a volcanic archipelago in the southern Aegean: about 3,600 years ago (c. 1600 BC) the Minoan eruption blew out the island's heart, leaving a caldera ringed by cliffs over 300 metres high — and setting off the chain that brought down Minoan Crete. On the rim, the white towns of Fira, Imerovigli and Oia hang above the deep blue, their blue domes making the island a byword for honeymoons and photography. To the south, Akrotiri preserves a Bronze Age town sealed by the ash (excavated since 1967); further on lies the rust-red Red Beach, while Kamari and Perissa on the east coast offer black volcanic sand. Fira (Thira) is the capital and transport hub of Santorini, perched on the caldera rim at about 260 metres, looking over the deep Aegean and the active volcanic island of Nea Kameni (last erupted in 1950). The town is known for its blue-domed churches, stepped lanes and cliff terraces: the Three Bells of Fira — the belfry of the Catholic Cathedral of St John the Baptist — is its most photographed landmark, and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera holds finds from Akrotiri. The old port below connects by cable car (about five minutes) or by donkeys up nearly 600 steps. One thing to plan around: Fira's terraces face east, so sunrise, the volcano and the caldera panorama are the draw here, while the sea-level sunset is better from Oia or Imerovigli (golden dusk still pours over Fira's heights). The town is the island's bus hub: about 6 km from the airport, 25 minutes to Oia, and direct to Kamari, Perissa and the other beaches.

Fira is the capital and largest town of Santorini, Greece.
