Fira

Introduction

Fira is the capital and largest town of Santorini, Greece. This white town on the caldera rim, with cascading white houses and blue-domed churches, spectacular views of the Aegean caldera below, and a cable car and donkey path to the old port, is the commercial, transport and viewing center of Santorini — the first choice to experience the classic "Aegean white and blue." Fira sits on the western caldera rim at ~260 m — below is the vast caldera formed by the c. 1600 BC Minoan eruption, filled with deep blue Aegean water. White houses cascade down the cliff, blue-domed churches punctuate the scene — Santorini's classic image. Fira is the island's busiest town — restaurants, bars, shops and hotels cluster here, making it the tourist hub. Cable car, donkey path and walkway link the cliff to the old port (Skala Fira) below — the departure point for boats to the volcano (Nea Kameni) and hot springs (Palea Kameni). The Fira-to-Oia caldera walk (~10 km) is Santorini's classic hike. Visiting to overlook the Aegean caldera from white houses on the rim and experience the classic "white and blue" is a must-do Aegean experience on Santorini.
