Introduction

Kamari Beach stretches for several kilometres along the southeast coast of Santorini, named for the black pebbles and coarse sand left by volcanic eruptions. Backed by Mesa Vouno mountain, it looks toward the ruins of Ancient Thera at one end. The sea is calm and shallow, and rows of sunbeds, umbrellas, tavernas and water-sports stands make it one of the island's best-equipped resort beaches. The black sand absorbs heat, so the surface can burn at midday and sandals help. An evening stroll along the seafront is a local ritual.
