Alexandria Travel Guide

Egypt's second city on the Mediterranean, the reborn library, Qaitbay Citadel and Pompey's Pillar - a classic seaport.

📍 Destination Overview

Alexandria is Egypt's second-largest city, sitting on the Mediterranean coast. Founded by Alexander the Great, it was once the cultural and commercial center of the ancient Mediterranean world. Though the Lighthouse of Alexandria — one of the ancient world's Seven Wonders — no longer stands, the Qaitbay Citadel on its ruins still guards the harbor. The world-famous ancient Library of Alexandria was reborn in modern times, its disc-shaped new library magnificent in scale. Pompey's Pillar, the Roman theater and the catacombs tell of Greco-Roman glory, while the gardens of Montaza Palace stand elegantly by the sea. Along the Corniche, palm breezes blow and the climate is cooler and pleasanter than Cairo's, making it a beloved seaside retreat for Egyptians.
