Rundale is a palace estate in the Zemgale region of Latvia, about 77 km south of the capital Riga. Its centrepiece, Rundale Palace, was designed from 1736 by the Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli as a summer residence for the Dukes of Courland and is often called the Versailles of the Baltics. The palace is celebrated for its ornate Baroque and Rococo interiors, surrounded by formal French-style gardens, a rose garden and fountains. Extensively restored since 1985, it now operates as a celebrated museum and event venue.
