Geghard Travel Guide

Geghard: an Armenian World Heritage monastery carved into rock, said to have once held the spear that pierced Jesus.

📍 Destination Overview

Geghard Monastery, about 40 km from Yerevan, is partly hewn into volcanic rock and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its name means spear, recalling the Holy Lance once kept here, and its 1215 church drips holy spring water. With the nearby temple of Garni it forms a classic route uniting Armenia's pagan and Christian heritage.
