Lake Sevan in eastern Armenia is a vast highland lake at about 1,900 metres, the largest in the Caucasus, which landlocked Armenians affectionately call the Armenian Sea. On a hilltop peninsula stands the 9th-century Sevanavank Monastery, whose steps open across the blue waters. Cool and high, it is a favourite retreat for swimming and trout when Yerevan swelters in summer.
