Ganja is Azerbaijan's second-largest city on the southern Caucasus foothills, an ancient city best in spring and autumn (May–Jun and Sep–Oct), hot in midsummer. Its pride is Nizami Ganjavi (1141–1209), among the greatest romantic narrative poets in Persian literature (Layla and Majnun and others); on the city's outskirts stands his grand cylindrical mausoleum. The city has the 17th-century Sheikh complex and Juma Mosque, and the curious Bottle House whose walls are inlaid with tens of thousands of glass bottles; nearby lies Goygol (Pearl) Lake reflecting the blue sky. About 4 hours from Baku.
