Naftalan, in western Azerbaijan near the Kura River, is the world's unique oil bath spa. Its naphthene-rich oil is non-flammable and believed to ease arthritis, neuralgia and skin conditions. Therapy involves a ten-minute immersion in oil at about 37 degrees. With roots in the 12th century, it offers sanatoriums with oil baths, massages and facials, plus Islamic heritage sites nearby.
