Snaefellsnes Travel Guide

'Iceland in miniature', the hat-shaped Kirkjufell, waterfalls, volcanoes and black-sand coasts - all on one peninsula.

📍 Destination Overview

Snæfellsnes Peninsula, jutting into the Atlantic from western Iceland, is called Iceland in miniature for its waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, lava, black-sand beaches and villages. Its star, Kirkjufell, a hat-shaped peak over a waterfall, is among Iceland's most photogenic scenes. The Snæfellsjökull glacier at the tip is the entrance to the earth in 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is known as the epitome of Iceland. It contains waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, lava, black sand beaches and fishing villages on one island. You can travel around it in one day by car. The stars are the unique church mountain (Straw Hat Mountain) and the small waterfall in front of the mountain - the most photogenic scene in Iceland and the filming location of "Game of Thrones". The aurora hanging on the top of the Straw Hat mountain in autumn and winter is even more dreamy. At the end of the peninsula is the Snæfellsjökull volcano at the entrance to "Journey to the Center of the Earth". The wind is mostly changeable and it is cold near the glacier, so be sure to keep warm and protected from wind. About 2 hours from Lei City.
