Rio Dulce Travel Guide

Rio Dulce, a gorge-river resort in eastern Guatemala, famed for its tropical canyon, Lake Izabal and the waterway to Livingston.

📍 Destination Overview

Rio Dulce in eastern Guatemala is the gorge where the river flows from Lake Izabal to the Caribbean; the name means sweet river. A 30km boat trip down to the Garifuna town of Livingston passes rainforest canyons, waterfalls and birds, with hot springs and bird islands en route. Lake Izabal holds Maya ruins, and Livingston is Guatemala's only Garifuna stronghold.
