Fortifications of Quebec National Historic Site
Introduction
The Fortifications of Québec are the only remaining intact city walls in North America, enclosing the UNESCO-listed Historic District of Old Québec. Built from the 17th-century French colonial era to defend against threats from the St. Lawrence, the ~4.6 km of ramparts, star-shaped citadel and old gates still give the old town its unmistakably European silhouette. A walk along the wall path overlooks Lower Town, the river and Île d'Orléans—stunning when spring ice breaks up. Maintained by Parks Canada, this military heritage is both an open-air history lesson and a superb photography and strolling route.
