Introduction

Place d'Armes is located in the Upper Town of Old Quebec, adjacent to Chateau Frontenac, and is one of the oldest squares in Quebec City. The square was established in the 1640s, originally named Grande Place, and served as a military parade ground for both French and British forces. At the center of the square stands the Monument de la Foi, commemorating the 300th anniversary of the arrival of Catholic missionaries. Today, the tree-shaded square is a gathering place for visitors and a departure point for sightseeing buses.
