Introduction
Fort York National Historic Site is Toronto's best-known historic military site, on the lakeshore west of downtown. The fort was built in 1793 and served as the British military post defending "York" (Toronto's predecessor) during the War of 1812; it is now a National Historic Site. It preserves some of the best-preserved 19th-century soldiers' barracks, powder magazines, officers' quarters and other buildings in Canada, offering free guided tours and historical re-enactments as an important place to learn about Canadian military history and the War of 1812.
