Introduction

Maple Leaf Gardens is one of Toronto's most iconic sporting landmarks. Opened in 1931, it was long the home of the NHL's storied Toronto Maple Leafs and witnessed the team's multiple Stanley Cup championships. Since 2009 the historic building has been transformed: the ground floor houses a large Loblaws supermarket (open to the community daily), while the upper levels became Toronto Metropolitan University's (formerly Ryerson University) Mattamy Athletic Centre. The building retains its classic old facade and arched roof, and the third floor is still an NHL-standard ice rink.
