Introduction
The Petrified Waterfall is a curious natural sight in the Oaxaca mountains—not a real waterfall, but white terraced platforms and stalactite-like rock walls formed as mineral-rich spring water flowed and deposited over a cliff for millennia, looking from afar like a frozen waterfall. By the cliff are natural and artificial mineral pools you can enter, beside a vast valley view. It was also once an ancient Zapotec irrigation site. The curious geology, cool pools and open mountain view are unforgettable.
