Monte Albán was the political, economic and religious center of the Zapotec civilization in the Oaxaca Valley, built atop a leveled mountaintop at about 1,940 m above sea level. Founded around 500 BC, it was one of the earliest cities in Mesoamerica. The site is renowned for its vast central plaza, stepped pyramids, observatory, underground tombs and the famous “Danzantes” stone carvings, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 (Historic Centre of Oaxaca and Archaeological Site of Monte Albán).
