The Zócalo is the centre of Oaxaca, framed on all sides by arcades, with a 19th-century cast-iron bandstand at its heart under mature trees. The government palace closes the southern side, while the north opens towards the cathedral square. Something is happening at almost any hour: vendors set up early, the arcade cafés fill through the day, and from late afternoon street bands, balloon sellers and craft stalls appear in succession, with processions and dancing on feast days.
