Introduction

The Secretaría de Educación Pública building is one of the starting points of the Mexican muralist movement. In the 1920s education minister José Vasconcelos backed murals as a tool of public instruction and commissioned Diego Rivera, who between 1923 and 1928 completed more than 120 frescoes across the three storeys of arcades around two courtyards, on labour, festivals, revolution and land distribution. The cycle is the key work of Rivera's formative period and essential ground for understanding the movement.
