Introduction

Plaza Hidalgo and the Jardín del Centenario are two adjoining squares in old Coyoacán, separated by a single street and together forming the social heart of the district. Plaza Hidalgo is flanked by the church of San Juan Bautista and the former borough house; the fountain at the centre of the Jardín del Centenario carries two bronze coyotes, echoing the Nahuatl meaning of Coyoacán, "place of coyotes". At weekends stalls, street performers and craft markets fill both squares — some of the liveliest public space in Mexico City.
