Introduction
Museo Anahuacalli was designed by Diego Rivera himself: a dark, pyramid-like structure built from local volcanic stone on the lava beds of southern Mexico City. Rivera housed here the nearly 50,000 pre-Hispanic ceramics, stone carvings and masks he collected over a lifetime, intending it as a "museum given to the people of Mexico". The interior is deliberately dim and rises in tiers, with views over the Pedregal from the top level; mosaics of feathered serpents and rain deities are set into the vaults and floors.
