Introduction

The Rose Garden is a beautiful park on the high ground east of the Aare in Bern, the best spot to overlook the old town panorama. Formerly a cemetery, it was turned into a garden in the early 20th century, named for its hundreds of rose varieties and over ten thousand rose bushes; it also has irises, rhododendrons and other flowers, blooming in spring and summer in profusion and fragrance. Its most praised feature is the view from the terrace—the old town embraced by the Aare: red-tiled roofs, tower and cathedral spires, the winding green Aare, and on clear days the Alps snow peaks beyond, a classic, moving panorama, especially lovely at dusk. The garden also has a pleasant garden restaurant. Admiring roses and overlooking the World Heritage old town, the Rose Garden is a tranquil, beautiful overlook in Bern.
