Introduction

The Georgia Aquarium beside Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta opened in 2005 as the world's largest aquarium and remains one of the largest indoor aquariums in the United States. It holds about 38 million liters of water and houses more than 100,000 animals of hundreds of marine and freshwater species. The most awe-inspiring exhibit is the Ocean Voyager gallery, where four whale sharks and manta rays glide through a massive tank, alongside beluga whales and sea otters in the cold-water gallery. Seven themed galleries cover deep ocean, tropical reef, freshwater rivers, penguins, dolphins and cold-water habitats, with a distinctive local exhibit on the Chattahoochee River ecosystem. A 4D theater, dolphin show and a paid whale shark dive program round out the experience. Built with a $250 million donation from Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus, the nonprofit educational institution draws more than 2.5 million visitors annually.
