Stone Mountain

Introduction

Stone Mountain Park is located about 25 kilometers east of Atlanta, Georgia, centered on the world's largest exposed granite monolith, and is the state's most iconic natural and historical complex. The mountain is approximately 800 meters long, 300 meters wide, and rises about 250 meters above the surrounding terrain, its bare grey granite surface reflecting brilliant white light in the sun, visible from downtown Atlanta. The north face features the world's largest bas-relief sculpture, 90 meters long and 58 meters high, depicting three Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson on horseback, a carving that continues to spark discussion about Southern historical memory. Visitors can take a cable car to the summit for panoramic views of the Atlanta metro area, or hike up the mountain to feel the unique granite surface. The park also features a historic town, plantation gardens, a carillon, and a summer laser show. At night, the laser projection on the mountain face turns the cliff into a giant outdoor screen, making it one of Atlanta's most popular family destinations.
