The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California is one of America's most famous Victorian oddities. This roughly 24,000-square-foot labyrinthine mansion was built continuously from 1886 to 1922 by Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune. Legend holds that she kept building without pause for 38 years to appease the spirits of those killed by the rifle. The house contains about 160 rooms, with staircases leading into ceilings, doors opening onto walls, secret chambers and passages, and the number 13 and spiderweb motifs recurring throughout.
