Chinatown

Introduction

Washington DC's Chinatown is a small but distinctive Chinese-heritage neighborhood in downtown DC. Centered at H Street and 7th Street, it features the iconic Chinese Friendship Archway, nearby Chinese restaurants and adjacent cultural venues — a blend of Chinese culture and urban energy. The community dates to the 19th century; though the Chinese population has diminished, the area retains strong cultural elements — most notably the Friendship Archway spanning H Street, a large colorful arch completed in 1986 symbolizing US-China friendship, one of the largest Chinatown arches in America, striking in vivid red, gold and green with ornate dragon and phoenix decorations. The surrounding area is a major cultural and entertainment zone — the adjacent Capital One Arena is home to the NBA's Wizards and the NHL's Capitals; nearby are the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and the American Art Museum. Several Chinese and Asian restaurants line the streets. Visiting Chinatown and photographing the iconic archway is a brief but distinctive downtown DC experience.
